Q&A: What’s Your Favorite Utah Discount Store?

I received this email from a reader recently and thought she posed a great question!

QUESTION:

I have a request. I am local to Utah and love your site!  I was
wondering if you would put it out to your readers if they have a
favorite local co-op or discount grocery store that they love.  I used
to shop at the Utah co-op in Murray all the time, but they have changed
the type of items they carry and no longer fit my needs.  I am sure
there are a lot of great little co-ops and other affordable local gems
out there and wonder if any of your readers could recommend a few.

Thanks!

Jen

UDD ANSWER:
A few years ago I wrote up posts about Clem's and the NPS store. Both stores are still in existence and I know many individuals who frequent them both!

I know Winco can't really be considered a “discount” store, but it's a great place to shop produce as it's super cheap.  {You can see my review of Winco here.}I also adore their bulk foods section– you can see a pretty eye-opening price comparison I did here. As we've added more kids to the family, I'm less willing to spend time rummaging through bins or browsing each aisle of discount stores because that just gives my kids more opportunities to creatively drive me crazy while shopping!

More grocery stores that offer cheaper prices are: Sprouts {formerly Sunflower Market}, Buy Low Market {although they're going out of business soon- everything is at least 20% off}, Rancho Market and Ream's.

Other sources of fresh, discounted produce are:

Now it's YOUR turn! Leave a comment and give us your thoughts and ideas regarding discount stores in Utah. I am really curious to hear about discount stores around the state!

I live in South Utah county. There is a Gem of a store in Salem Utah; Stokes Market. I always find great deals there in the meat and produce isles. The staff is very friendly and always ready to help. They have yellow store coupons that they put on the food that is about to expire. They usually lower the price first, then put on the store coupon for an added bonus. I find amazing deals every time I go in there. They are known for their one day meat sales. it can get really crazy on those days. The other grocery stores in the area have had to change their tactics a bit to keep up with them. Having them in the area has been a win/ win situation for all of us. The competition has made it better shopping prices for all of us here in South Utah County. I do love the discount salvage stores. I wish there were some closer to me. They are really fun, you never know what you might find. There used to be one in Provo that I would frequent. One day we may have one close again.~happymomma

I love the Petersen Family Farm in the summer. They grow tons of their own produce and bring in what they don't grow (peaches, apples, etc.) from all over the state. They have a pick-your-own pumpkin patch in the fall. (My son also attended their preschool which was amazing! They feed goats and get chicken eggs as well as learn!)I think their produce prices are great and everything is so fresh. I love supporting a local farm. http://www.petersenfamilyfarm.com/ Address: 11800 South & 4000 West in Riverton And you can't beat Winco for grocery prices!!! ~rmb

Community Co-op also has a market sale during their Saturday distributions, from 8 am through 12 pm. They accept cash, credit, debit, and SNAP cards on site.

Also, Sprout does double ad Wednesdays, and you can preview the deals from both ads starting on Tuesdays.

I use NPS, but never heard of Clems-thanks for the info! Here in West Jordan, off 78th South and 32nd West, we have a store called Going Bananas. Its only open Thursday-Saturday. They buy stuff from Costco (not sure if any other places) that has been returned, often has nothing wrong with it. Lots of clothes, but pretty much anything else. Very little food.

I love the BDO Outlet in Ogden. I used to just go in for the ridiculously low priced Lofthouse Cookies. Now it has evolved into so much more. They sell salvage, closeout, and close to date groceries. 20 oz Pepsi and Coke products 3/$1 I love getting the Aspen Mills bread there. I wish they had more produce, but when they do get produce it is great quality and great price. I have found the best thing to do is get on their email list. they send out an email every Wednesday that lets me know about any new products or great deals. That way I know whether or not to make the trip out there. You can sign up to get the emails on their website. Great store!
